Overview

R1 Construction partnered with Barking & Dagenham College to deliver a modern Green Skills Hub, including a refurbished Science Laboratory and a brand-new Electric Vehicle Workshop. The project replaced an outdated mechanical workshop with purpose-built facilities that provide students with hands-on experience in science, engineering, and sustainable technologies. Featuring specialist teaching spaces, practical classrooms, and full MEP installations, the development equips learners with the skills needed for future careers in green and technology-focused industries.

R1 Construction has partnered with Barking & Dagenham College and Academy Estate Consultants to deliver a series of innovative education facilities designed to advance green skills, science education, and sustainable technologies. Each new space has been purposefully developed to support cutting-edge learning and promote sustainable innovation across the college’s curriculum.

The existing Science Laboratory is undergoing a full internal refurbishment, including structural works and the installation of specialist laboratory furniture, transforming it into a modern, high-performance teaching environment that reflects contemporary industry standards. Alongside this, a brand-new Electric Vehicle (EV) Workshop is being constructed to meet the rapidly growing demand for electric vehicle expertise. This facility includes a new structural steel frame, practical teaching classrooms, a complete mechanical, electrical and plumbing installation, and external works designed to enhance the surrounding environment. Together, these improvements will provide students with hands-on experience in technologies that represent the future of the transport and engineering sectors.

These developments also form part of a wider project to replace the college’s ageing mechanical workshop, which had long outlived its purpose. In its place now stands a contemporary, single-storey Green Skills Hub featuring both a Motor Vehicle Workshop and a dedicated Electric Vehicle Workshop, designed to support the next generation of engineering and manufacturing learners. R1 Construction is proud to have delivered this forward-thinking facility, helping the college strengthen its commitment to developing green skills and preparing students for careers in sustainability-focused industries.
