It's National Apprenticeship Week!

11 Feb 2025

To mark the occasion, we’re revisiting our newest apprentice, Ben Mulholland, who joined R1 Construction last year. A Level 2 Groundworks Apprentice, Ben has been gaining hands-on experience while working on-site at Webb Crescent in Dawley.

We recently caught up with Ben and Jordan Bannister, Site Manager at Webb Crescent, to hear about his progress.

Ben shared: "Being an apprentice has been a rewarding experience so far. I’ve had the chance to apply what I’ve learnt at college to real-world tasks, like drainage, slabbing, and edging, which has helped me build my confidence. It’s been great to work alongside skilled colleagues who are always ready to share their knowledge and guide me.

"I’ve gained hands-on experience with a variety of tasks, from using a compactor plate to installing services and learning lots about health and safety. Every day brings something new, and I’m excited to keep developing my skills while contributing to something important as part of a team."

Jordan added: "Ben’s journey highlights the real impact apprenticeships have in shaping the future of construction. From day one, he has shown initiative, picking up tasks without being asked and approaching every job with a positive attitude. He is always willing to help, never complains, and consistently arrives on time, demonstrating a strong work ethic that ensures he sees every task through to completion.

"Ben actively asks questions to deepen his understanding and has shown great attentiveness to health and safety procedures, as noted by the H&S Manager, who has also seen his confidence grow. His eagerness to learn and commitment to developing his skills have made him a valued member of the team. Apprenticeships provide the opportunity to gain hands-on experience while making a real contribution, and Ben’s progress is a fantastic example of how the right guidance and support can help apprentices thrive. It’s been a pleasure watching him grow so far, and I’m excited to see where his apprenticeship takes him."

Well done, Ben! It’s fantastic to see your hard work and dedication paying off. Apprenticeships are a vital part of developing future talent in construction, and your progress is a great example of what can be achieved with the right attitude and training.

We look forward to seeing you continue to grow with R1!
